Roots to Success Risk Management Training Workshops

TAKING A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO MANAGING FARM RISK

Funded under the AgriRisk Initiative as part of the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, the Roots to Success project Is making meaningful progress towards improved risk management for the agriculture and agri-food sector by promoting a comprehensive approach to managing risk. This project provides farmers and consultants working directly with farmers with much-needed training to identify, assess, and prioritize risks and create comprehensive risk management plans. The project will help establish industry benchmarks using baseline date to identify opportunities for policy and program improvement to meet the risk management needs of Canada’s farmers. This includes looking at ways to establish linkages with industry initiatives including the government’s BRM programs.

TRAINING

Farm Management Canada offers online and in-person workshops to train producers on risk assessment and the implementation of a comprehensive risk management plan for their farm, and to train professionals offering consultative services to farmers to use a comprehensive risk management approach with their clients.

AgriShield – Risk Assessment and Planning Platform

What is AgriShield?

AgriShield is a comprehensive risk assessment and mitigation platform for Canada’s farmers developed under the leadership of Farm Management Canada. It is the first platform to offer a 360° view to help assess and put a plan in place to manage risks on the farm.

AgriShield will help you:

  • Identify, assess and prioritize your farm risks
  • Create a risk management action plan for you and your farm team
  • Access resources and tools to help you manage risk

The platform covers 6 risk families including People, Finance, Market, Business Management, Business Environment and Production, which break down into 19 risk categories. Each of these risk categories, including Personal Well-Being, Hired Labour, Money Management, Sourcing, Selling & Trade, Environment & Climate, Pest & Disease Management, etc. is further broken down into risk situations defined as a situation that may result in exposure to risk.

For each risk situation, there are best practices listed to determine preparedness to manage that risk and help identify opportunities to improve managing the risk.

Users can either conduct a risk assessment or simply access resources and tools to help manage risk. Resources include a variety of options, from government programs to industry tools, to processes and procedures for taking a proactive approach to managing risk.

Risk Profile

By using AgriShield, users are able to complete a risk assessment for their farm and generate a risk profile that will identify which risks are a priority. They can then develop an action plan to start dealing with the identified risks towards improved risk management.

How to get started?
Full access to AgriShield is available for a yearly license fee of $149. Click here to access the AgriShield platform.

A NEW website to help farmers prepare for emergencies, contingency plan and improve their capacity to face uncertainty.
Ask questions. Get answers. Find resources.

COVID-19 has highlighted the importance of being prepared for change – to increase the capacity to build the resilience and be ready to seize opportunities that present themselves along the way. This is why Farm Management Canada has created AgriResponse.ca.

As much as we encourage producers to take a proactive approach to managing risk, we realize many of us tend to react to changing circumstances. It is our hope that we can use the current pandemic as a way to help farmers consider emergency preparedness measures and contingency planning as a necessary component to managing the farm – to be prepared for whatever may happen, drawing on their current experiences of COVID.

The website is composed of three main sections:

Your Questions: a section of the website where you can submit your questions to industry experts.
Our Answers: a section of the website where all the answers to questions from the public are posted.
Support Programs and Resources: a section of the website listing various tools and support available to producers to help with contingency planning and emergency preparedness.

AgriResponse is a way for us to focus our attention on the immediate concerns expressed by producers, and help provide immediate solutions. We hope that Canadian producers will take advantage of this opportunity to build their resilience.

AgriResponse.ca is available to all Canadian producers for free.

This project is funded in part by the Government of Canada.
